Sonny has had a remarkable 2025 season culminating in her recent appearance at the English Schools Championships.
She qualified to run in both 1500m and 3000m and after much discussion decided on the 1500m despite the risks of having to get through the heats.
Friday in Birmingham was very hot and the heats were fiercely contested. Everything however seemed to be going according to plan, with Sonny sitting just off the front for the first 3 laps, looking calm and relaxed but as they got on the home straight, she was only 5th (4 qualified) but a quick surge with 40m to go and she got through in 3rd place. Promptly came over, sat down looking calm as you like, unlike her coach, and when asked 'what happened, you nearly blew it' casually replied "it was ok I had plenty in reserve!"
Note to all athletes, Don't do this to your coach!!
Anyway, Saturday came and time for the serious business of the final. This was a very well contested final, full of great young athletes, lots of argy bargy, elbows, changes in leadership etc. All 12 were still in contention at the bell but suddenly 3 athletes broke clear, Sonny had to react to this and although the front 2 got away, Sonny chased down the 3rd placed athlete, putting in a 67 sec last lap to claim a Brillant Bronze medal in her junior year in the competition!!!!
It was brilliant to see her on the podium after all the hard work she has put in over the last 2 years.
Add to this becoming South of England 1500m champion, first in the 3000m at Middlesex champs in new county record and second in the same champs at 1500m plus a 16.45 park run at Battersea, and it really has been a remarkable season. Well done Sonny!
