Although Highgate Harriers were very well represented with the men, women and youngsters in the other age groups, in the Middlesex Track & Field Championships, on the 9/10 of May, at Lee Valley, with good results; Ben Gritz, was the only senior from the club who ran in the Championships, doing a 'Senior' 100m heat in 11.86, quite close to when he ran his best time of 11.5 some 18 years ago! He did make the semi-Final at Lee Valley but was a non- starter.
Ben Gritz has an interesting record. When he was a Junior 'Under 17' he was amongst the top six 100m hurdlers in the UK and a bit later a coach told him he should do the 400 hurdles but he did not like the event so declined. He ran just over 54 second for a flat 400m in his younger days.
Ben Griz is now 48 years old and said that when he was 35/36 years as a New Master runner, he won the UK Masters hurdles title indoors, a couple of times. He did remember having a gap of 8 years out of the sport after he was at University, when he did not compete but enjoyed coming back to running again and, he has been with Highgate Harriers for the last couple of years
